Nissan working on GT-R SUV and sedan?

The rumors of a Nissan GT-R based sedan were not too surprising. It’s not too hard to make a platform a little longer and add a few doors. It’s the next step that weren’t expecting: a GT-R based SUV.
Although performance SUVs are not the most popular cars right now, according to reports, Nissan is going ahead with plans to raise the GT-R’s platform. If this Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5/X6 competitor sees the light of day, it will likely arrive under the Infiniti logo. The GT-R’s all-wheel drive platform would be a natural starting point for a good performance SUV, but fanboys out there may cringe to think that Godzilla may lend a hand to getting the kids to soccer practice.

BMW Z10 ED green supercar coming in 2011

We know BMW is looking for a place to showcase its eco-friendly technology called EfficientDynamics. Now it looks like BMW’s Technik skunkworks (these are the same people who made the Z1 and Z8) will be bypassing the concept car and going right into production with a mean green machine.
Autocar is reporting that this will be a two-seat model called Z10 ED (Efficient Dynamics) that will be launched in 2011. It will be built in limited numbers, and the £80,000 (about $115,00 at the current rates) price tag should keep the car exclusive just like other BMW small batch offerings.
BMW is rumored to be developing a new high-pressure turbocharged direct-injection straight six cylinder engine to power the car. "The idea is to bring all the very latest technology together in a way that will allow a high level of performance without overburdening the environment in a way that the current crop of supercars do," said an insider privy to BMW’s plans. "There is no reason why they need to be mutually exclusive when you consider the sort of technology that exists today. It is just a matter of applying it correctly."
Back in November we heard a similar situation that pegged the M1 Hommage concept to be BMW’s green supercar, but the Z10 ED name may suggest it will take its design cues from the 2007 concept car. No matter the design, the car should weight in around a light 3000 lbs mainly because of a simple carbon fiber body panels, integrated door frames and sill panels.

2011 Mazda RX-7 rendering

It’s been a while since we’ve heard rumors about a new Mazda RX-7. Just like the BMW M7 rendering, we don’t expect one either. But if the folks at Motor Magazine in Japan are going to take the time to put together a rendering, we’re more than happy to get caught in the daydream.

Mazda RX7 not dead? RX-9 in the works?

Maybe we jumped the gun...a few days ago we saw a new rendering of a future Mazda RX-7. While we thought it looked great, the global economic meltdown and the multi-month gap without any rumors had us sure the sports car was left for dead.
Now Inside Line is reporting that resurrection is coming in the form of a RX-9. Mazda may be pushing through a sports car to replace the RX-8, and keep the company rotary-happy for years to come. If all goes right the RX-9 may be powered by a mid-engined (behind the front axle, in front of the driver) twin-rotor engine making 270 hp. The car could also take advantage of new technology that would improve the fuel consumption by twenty percent of the traditionally gas-hungry rotary engine.

2011 BMW Z2 - new details revealed

BMW left a hole in its line up with the new Z4. The car is not too big, but it does put a wide enough gap between it and its predecessor, the Z3, to take it out of direct competition with like the small, lightweight Mazda MX-5. Not likely to leave a market wide open for other companies, BMW is rumored to be working on a Z2 model for featherweight fun.
The Z2 will be built on a modified Z4 platform, and unlike its bigger brother will only be offered with a choice of four cylinders engines with a maximum capacity of two liters. The base version will be a 1.8-liter with 150 hp, while a “M” version could be a turbocharged car with an output of around 300 hp. Like previously reported, a hybrid version is also in the works and a M version might also be a possibility.
The Z2 will be offered with BMW’s latest technologies, including active steering, dual clutch gearbox and active suspension. The price will be somewhere around the $30k area and the official debut will be made at the end of 2010, with sales to begin in 2011.

Baby McLaren rendering

Baby McLaren rendering
Posted on 03.2.2009 13:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

Now that Mercedes is going it alone with its next supercar, McLaren has room to develop multiple cars for itself.
Accompanying the P11 will be a new coupe placed below the P11 in the lineup. The car will be smaller then the 500 hp P11, which should make it a direct competitor to the Audi R8 and Porsche 911. The rumored 450 hp 6.2-liter Mercedes-based engine, 0 to 60 time of 4.5 seconds, and £80,000 price (about $115,000 at the current rates) put this baby McLaren squarely in between the standard Porsche 911 and 911 Turbo.
Don’t get too excited about this one just yet. The P11 will appear first in

Bugatti prepares Veyron replacement

Whenever we get rumors that Bugatti is hard at work on a new Veyron it gets us excited. Now Bugatti’s president Franz-Josef Paefgen has officially hinted to a car that could premiere in 2010 or 2011. "The new car must fit into the Bugatti history, but also to the Veyron. A totally different direction is not an option."
From that quote we’re guessing this is not a car to complement the Veryon, but something to replace it. Plus, the Veyron’s days are numbered with only about 50 coupes left as well as most of the planned 150 unit run of the open top Grand Sport. No matter what car shows up, we know it will be fast. "If someone tries to beat us, we will have an answer ready," said Paefgen.
The only part that we have a hard time believing is the timetable. The Veyron was a tough car to build. Bugatti engineers had to keep reinventing the car because of the cooling and aerodynamic problems that arise when hitting 253 mph. Considering it took them five years to go from concept to (hand-built) production car with the Veyron, we’re betting we’re going to have to stay excited for much longer than just 2011.

BMW GT 6 - new details

Last week we got heard a rumor of three new vehicles joing the BMW lineup. One of the more evolutionary ideas was the 6-Series GT, and now our friends at the BMW Blog have gotten their hands on a few more details from a reliable source.
The purpose for adding space to the 6-Series coupe will be to give direct competition to future cars like the Audi A7 and the redesigned Mercedes CLS. The layout of the GT 6 is likely to feature full four passenger seating and use two small rear hinged doors (similar to the Mazda RX-8). Inspiration for the design is supposed to blend elements of the upcoming 2010 6-Series coupe and CS concept. Just like the 5-Series GT, the 6-Series GT should feature a full hatchback in the design.
BMW may even throw all of it’s new engine technology at this coup/sedan. It’s rumored to offer a wide array powerplants including a twin-turbo V8, diesel V6 and even a hybrid engine.

Porsche Bluesport rendering

Okay, we are not going to go through the whole process again about how Porsche may get a version of Volkswagen’s BlueSport Concept. A rendering of the roadster is a good excuse to focus on the Porsche side of the speculation, but for those that don’t know the whole story, just read this.
The basics are if Porsche gets in bed with the VW Bluesport, it could either serve as the new smaller, lighter Boxster or slot under the Boxster as a 914 revival. If Porsche does develop a brand new car, don’t expect the name to be 356, Speedster or anything else significant from Porsche’s history. The German company is too proud of its heritage to be reduced to selling car on nostalgia.
If a Bluesport Porsche does go into production, no matter who does the actual assembly, Porsche would still be the one to make the engine. The likely candidate would be it’s planned four-cylinder powerplant.
Remember that this is a lot of speculation. Porsche has a lot of obstacles including a large investment in facilities, and it would need to find a way to distinguish the next Boxster so there would be no cannibalization. But if this plan does come together, we could expect to see the new roadster by 2013

McLaren F1 coming back

McLaren has been hinting at offering a full range of supercars for a while, but now there is some real exciting news: it’s working on a successor to the McLaren F1. When the original F1 debuted back in 1992, it was the fastest and most expensive car in the world. It’s 240 mph top speed held the production car record until the Bugatti Veyron beat it in 2005 (then the SSC Ultimate Aero beat the Veyron.)
Now a source within McLaren told Autocar, “We have just started looking at doing another F1. It is a clean sheet design.” So will the new F1 try to regain its spot at the top of the supercar mountain? All we can guess right now is that the BMW-sourced V12 in the original will be swapped out for something from McLaren’s new partner Mercedes. A likely candidate is a reworked version of the 6.3-liter V8 that’s already in service in cars like the SL63 AMG and the new E63 AMG.
Unlike the original F1, the new one will likely be more conventional. There were only 106 of the first F1s build over its seven-year life cycle, and only 64 of those were intended for road use. For McLaren to break even on this new car, it will likely have to raise the production numbers and maybe even forget about the gold engine lining.

Press Release
Rinspeed?s Zero-Emission World Debut at the Geneva Motor Show - a Green ?Fish? with Q-Factor
Thirty years after the movie thriller ?The Spy Who Loved Me? hit the silver screen ?sQuba? is the first car that can actually ?fly? under water.
?Dive it again, James!? If the situation gets too hot for the secret agent he?ll go underground - or under water. So demonstrated impressively by Roger Moore in ?The Spy Who Loved Me? in 1977 when he dove below the waves in a sleek vehicle that moments before seemed to be an ordinary car. The only problem: The scene never really took place; it was an animation. With the ?sQuba,? the world?s first real submersible car, the movie fake now becomes reality for visitors of the Geneva Motor Show (March 6th - 16th, 2008). Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht (52) is known for his extraordinary automotive creations. The acknowledged James Bond enthusiast and Swiss automobile visionary kept revisiting this scene in his mind over and over: ?For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water. Now we have made this dream come true.?

Porsche Panamera V8s - UK prices announced

Porsche has not officially pulled the wrappings off the four-door Panamera, but that’s not stopping it from rolling out the sales planning. Porsche’s U.K. office has revealed the base pricing structure for when the cars go on sale on September 12th:
£72,266 ($99,237) Panamera S with a 405 hp 4.8-liter V8 £77,269 ($106,107) Panamera 4S with a 405 hp 4.8-liter V8 £95,298 ($130,865) Panamera Turbo with a 500 hp 4.8-liter turbo V8
The PDK double-clutch transmission is available for £2,289 ($3,143).
What is oddly absent from the pricing schedule is the base model which should get a 300 hp 3.6-liter V6 engine. Will the U.K. not get the V6 engine? Historically, the U.S. is the only place that shies away from small engines.
Maybe all will become a little clearer when the Porsche’s sedan makes its official debut next month at the Shanghai Auto Show.
Follow the press release after the jump for the full breakdown.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS rendering

The Mercedes-Benz CLS is no longer the only four-door coupe on the market, and in order to stay on top the German luxury car maker will have to keep improving their product. It is expected that the second generation CLS will be revealed in 2010 as a 2011 model. Spy photographers already caught the Mercedes testing, but with the heavy disguise it is difficult to tell what the final product will look like. So for now all we can go on is our imagination and the imaginations of the artists at Global Motors have come up with

2009 Hyundai Equus

Hyundai revealed today the 2009 Equus on the Korean market. Equus is in its second generation and will be available in three trim levels, with prices between $42,410 USD to $70,234 USD. There is no info yet if the Equus will be offered in the USA.
Equus is being offered with a choice of V6 and V8 engines, with power of 290-hp and 366-hp respectively. The V6 has a a fuel-economy of 25 mpg, while the V8 delivers 27 mpg.

Front and rear, Equus rides on 5-link suspension featuring lightweight aluminium control arms. Such a multi-link setup for both the front and the rear is uncommon in the industry but through a careful optimisation of the wheel geometry and bushing characteristics, stability and ride quality were optimised. To improve shock control over the wheels, Hyundai worked in partnership with ZF-SACHS to develop Amplitude Selective Dampers (ASD) which features an innovative relief valve, a design Equus shares with only one other car in the world, its luxury stable-mate Genesis. The air suspension is electronically governed to minimize body roll, nose-diving and other undesirable characteristics.

Equus also comes equipped with an Electric Parking Brake which is automatically released once the vehicle is put into drive gear and an Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering System which reduces fuel consumption.

BMW 7-Series made its world debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. In USA it went on sale this spring with the following prices:750i is $81,125 and the 750Li is $85,025.

The new BMW 7 Series is entering the market with a V8 and a straight-six gasoline engine both featuring Twin Turbo technology and direct fuel injection (High Precision Injection) as well as the first representative of a new generation of six-cylinder diesel engines.
The eight-cylinder developing maximum output of 407 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm in the BMW 750i, for example, is the most efficient engine in its performance class and the only engine of its kind worldwide with the turbochargers fitted in the V-space between the two rows of cylinders.

For the BMW 740i, output of the six-cylinder Twin Turbo has been raised to 240 kW/326 hp at 5,800 rpm. The newly developed six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 730d, in turn, develops maximum output of 180 kW/ 245 hp at 4,000 rpm. And it goes without saying that all engines comply in full with the strict EU 5 emission standard.

2009 Mercury Mariner VOGA
Posted on 03.27.2009 10:00 by Terence KeonFiled under:

VOGA means fashion in Italian. It is no wonder why Ford designer Camilo Pardo, the designer of the Ford GT, chose this name when he introduced the upscale appearance package in 2006 on the vehicle named after the Italian fashion capital, the Mercury Milan. Since then Mercury has expanded the elegant VOGA line to include the Mercury Mariner crossover based on the Ford Escape.

Being an aesthetics package, the VOGA option is much more about design than function. In order to purchase the high-class VOGA equipped Mercury, future Mariner owners must first upgrade to a Mercury Mariner Premier, and then purchase the Moon and Tune package that includes a large panoramic sunroof and a seven speaker MP3 compatible sound system and much more.

2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS Design Edition 3
Posted on 03.26.2009 10:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

It looks like after producing Design Edition models for the Cayman and Boxster, Porsche decided it needed a bigger challenger, literally. This time the German company will grab 1000 Cayenne GTSs off the line and use them for the Design Edition 3.
The paintwork follows the same scheme as the other DE cars with stripes in the same hue as the body color. This time its “Lava Grey” paint with black striping and grey 21-inch wheels. Inside there will be plenty of badging to remind owners that their Cayenne is special, as well as plenty of black leather with red stitching. This theme is carried over to the matching watch and luggage.
Unlike the Boxster Design Edition 2, which saw a small increase in power, the Cayanne will be an appearance-only job. Owners will have to cope with the fact that their SUV only makes 405 hp. One element that may be less flattering is that while Porsche lists the standard Cayenne GTS with a 0 to 60 time of 5.7 seconds, this one is listed as taking 6.1 seconds (maybe it was carrying all of the luggage during the test run).
Sales will begin in Germany in May and then spread to the rest of the world. Pricing starts at in Europe at €79,100, and the 100 examples being sent to the U.S. will retail for $89,900.

Audi A8 rendering
Posted on 03.26.2009 09:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

Before Audi turns a big sedan into a coupe with the A7, its going to have one last crack at making a large sedan into a large sedan with an updated A8. Just like previous renderings and rumors, the new A8 should get a sleeker and more aggressive design inspired by the A7/Sportback concept. Just like smaller models, Audi’s next flagship will utilize the MLP platform, which will allow for the engine to be mounted further back and more weight directed toward the center of the car.
As far as the engine lineup goes, the middle of the road should stay the same with at variety of V6 and V8 engines in both gas and diesel forms offered over the international line. What is unclear just now is that if Audi continues to go for smaller engines with turbocharging, a four cylinder engine may become the base powerplant. Rumors suggest 230 hp version of the 2.0-liter TFSI engine from the Volkswagen Group’s parts bin may become the lowest rung on the A8 ladder. For the same reason a four-banger may make an appearance in the large sedan, it may also jeopardize the top of the line W12 engine or possibly the Lamborghini-inspired 5.2-liter V10 in the next R8.
Any engine shake ups should not have a huge effect on the U.S. market, where we currently have only V8 engines or higher, and will likely never see a diesel version of the big sedan. The official debut of the next A8 will be made in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and the sales will begin in 2010.

Rolls-Royce reveals huge engine for the RR4 (Silver Ghost)
Posted on 03.24.2009 14:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

Last month Rolls-Royce CEO, Tom Purves announced that the engine for the production version of the 200EX concept would not be from the BMW parts bin and would be a brand new V12 unit. Now Purves has revealed specific details on the engine at press conference in New York.
The new baby Roller, which will hopefully revive the Silver Ghost name, will get a 6.6-liter turbo charged V12 engine making at least 500 hp. While a displacement of .55 liters per cylinder doesn’t seem like much, it’s huge in the V12 community, which rarely gets above half a liter per cylinder. The 632 hp Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 has a displacement of 6.5-liters, and the 651 hp Ferrari Enzo has a displacement of 6.0-liters; so we have no trouble believing the 6.6-liter turbocharged V12 in the 200EX will make Rolls-Royce’s claim of “upwards” of 500 hp.
The powerplant will be mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Not to many people’s surprise, Rolls-Royce is claiming that fuel economy will be much better than the larger Phantom. There will be plenty more info revealed on the baby Roller between now and when the production version is expected at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show.

Lamborghini: no production Estoque to cancel
Posted on 03.24.2009 09:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

It’s not that rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated; instead Lamborghini claims rumors of the Estoque’s creation have been greatly exaggerated.
Yesterday we reported that Lamborghini has put the Estoque’s production on indefinite hold. Now the story has caught some steam, plus other recent stories of Lambo’s misfortune in the slowing economy, has caused the company to react. Lamborghini posted a brief comment on its press site that included: "As stated when the car was shown, Lamborghini believes that if a third model line should ever be added to its product line up, a four door luxury performance saloon could be a logical product strategy. No decision has been made to produce the Estoque."
Basically this does not make the previous stories invalid. Lamborghini still has not confirmed that plans for the Estoque will be going ahead. The company just wanted to remind all of us that there was no official car to cancel.

Lamborghini Estoque delayed, maybe canceled
Posted on 03.23.2009 10:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

The global economic crisis already forced Lamborghini to shut its doors for a few weeks, and now its put the Estoque sedan on indefinite hold. According to Maurizio Reggiani, Lambo’s head of research and development, "The timing and market conditions are just not right for an additional model line."
It seems that there had not been a lot of cash committed to Lamborghini’s first sedan project yet, and so Lamborghini was able to put it on a shelf without much financial penalty. There has been no mention yet when or if the project will be restarted.
The Estoque was supposed to borrow heavily from its corporate cousin Audi. So if plans for a car that could share parts over multiple car lines has been put on indefinite hold, how much hope can we keep for the mostly bespoke Murcielago replacement?

Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost drophead rendering
Posted on 03.20.2009 17:00 by Myles KornblattFiled under:

Earlier this week we caught wind of a rumor that Rolls-Royce was planning coupe and convertible versions of the 200EX concept. Now were passing on a rendering from the people at Global Motors.
Since this is a rendering of a rumor, we decided to go with the production car’s rumored name: Silver Ghost. The popularity of convertibles like the Corniche makes a drop top version a logical step for Rolls-Royce’s smallest car (the sedan is more than a foot and a half longer than a long wheelbase BMW 7-Series.)
